Wonder Woman: 10 Major DCEU Problems It Fixed
8. The Humor Actually Works
On one side of the coin, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman took themselves far too seriously, with little to no genuine humor being allowed in each, lest the film lose its "mature" tone. In reality, it just comes off as the movies trying too hard to appear pensive.
On the other side of that coin, Suicide Squad's humor was way too telegraphed, which was extra annoying considering that most of the jokes weren't even that funny at all. It's a classic example of replacing one extreme with another and being no better off for it, which defeats the purpose entirely.
Meanwhile, Wonder Woman proved that it is possible to tell a serious, mature story while still letting your audience laugh a bit along the way. It was just a matter of finding that perfect balance, and luckily every single joke in this movie absolutely nails the mark.
There is no other superhero film that portrays a funnier take on the fish out of water dynamic than Wonder Woman. From her sheer confusion while navigating the modern world she's thrust into, to her hilariously uncomfortable conversations with Steve Trevor about the differences between their respective worlds, there's something here to make anyone laugh, all while never undermining the film's serious narrative.
