Wonder Woman: 10 Reasons To Be Excited
4. It's Setting The Tone For Future Superhero Movies
As mentioned previously, the sense of humour and enjoyment of the material is front and centre in Wonder Woman's trailer, which breaks with a lot of DC's conventions. But the film also has a weight to it that makes its appeal more than that of a diverting entertainment, which to a large extent the Marvel movies have become.
By their nature, films are political, even if the effect is unintentional. To my mind, the effect with Wonder Woman is most definitely intentional, as there's a lot riding on the first female-led film of this current superhero wave. As such, studios may learn lessons (good and bad) from how the film performs and is received, let alone the actually quality of the thing. Marvel will most likely be keeping a close eye on things as they develop their recently-announced Captain Marvel, despite the characters having huge differences.
If all goes well, Wonder Woman could form a new template for not only female-focused superhero films, but the entire DC slate and the genre as a whole. Or it could prove, once again, that a template isn't necessary to create a compelling story about someone who can stop bullets with their bracelets or leap tall buildings in a single bound. Wouldn't that be nice?
