Nearly ten years after Iron Man ushered in the modern superhero era, a hegemony has begun to take over the comic book movie genre. Thanks to Marvel's critical and box office domination, the Marvel aesthetic has began to creep into other studios' superhero franchises, influencing both the X-Men and Spider-Man series.

From the outset of its creation, the DCEU strove to set itself apart from Marvel by making its films visually distinctive, which is why Warner Bros. let visionary director Zack Snyder launch the franchise. Thus far, DCEU's plan of attack has produced movies that are uneven quality-wise but are unquestionably gorgeous to watch. It seems that Wonder Woman's World War I setting will continue DC's mission of making comic book movies that stand out from the crowd visually.

Audiences have seen superhero period pieces before, but have never seen a hero getting down and dirty in the trenches. If Wonder Woman can deliver the goods, its uncommon setting will make it memorable and more likely to stand out in audiences' minds. Once Warner Bros. produces a visually stunning movie with a strong plot, it may well earn the kind of accolades Marvel has been enjoying so far.
