Another issue that seems to plague many superhero movies, with it being one of the areas that the usually acclaimed MCU oft-falls down on too, is the villain, and again Wonder Woman is no exception to this.

It has a few different antagonists, with Ares as the Big Bad, and Danny Huston's General Ludendorff and Elena Anaya's Doctor Poison serving as the more grounded baddies. There's not too much mention of Ares in the various reviews, though Screen Rant do go into some detail on the character, saying:

"Where Wonder Woman struggles to stick the landing is in the film’s major villain, Ares... neither his character nor his motivations are adequately developed.... the bulk of Ares’ development is ham-fisted into the final act of Wonder Woman through a self-explanatory and trite villain monologue."

Metro US also discuss the issues with Ares and the other villains: "The super-secret villain turns out to be as dull as in any Marvel outing. It doesn’t do nearly enough with a villain boasting the great, great name 'Dr. Poison.'"

Variety writes that "None of the film’s villains get much of a chance to distinguish themselves." IGN say "As far as the villains go, they have sparse screen time and do little more than incite conflict for Diana and company to deal with."
