20 Movie Roles That Were Insanely Miscast

8. Mark Wahlberg - Max Payne

2008's adaptation of hit video game Max Payne was generally pretty terrible, but it didn't help at all that the production made the woefully lazy decision to cast Marky Mark himself, Mark Wahlberg, as the title character.

Anyone who's played the hard-boiled noir-splashed video games knows that Max needs to be a grizzled, stoic, gravel-voiced character, and Wahlberg doesn't fit any of those descriptions at all.

He's far too animated, he lacks the necessary edge, and his voice doesn't sound even remotely right.

Gamers can be a bit too precious about flesh-and-blood adaptations matching the source 1:1, but in this case they were absolutely on the money with their criticisms.

Now sure, this is a film that also felt casting Mila Kunis as the femme fatale Mona Sax was a good idea, but it's Wahlberg's shambolic miscasting that well and truly sank the enterprise, enough that Hollywood hasn't touched the property ever since.
