20 Movie Roles That Were Insanely Miscast
4. John Wayne - The Conqueror
And now for a casting choice that's aged like milk left out in the scorching summer sun - John Wayne's risible turn as Genghis Khan in the 1956 historical epic The Conqueror.
What really needs to be said about this? Even if you can somehow ignore the obvious whitewashing of it all, it's simply impossible to accept Wayne, his public persona being what it is, as the Mongol leader.
Through and through, it just looks and sounds like John Wayne cosplaying as Genghis Khan - and badly.
Easy though it is to laugh at such a brazen casting feat today, even 70 years ago some critics took umbrage with Wayne trying to squeak this one through, and in 1980 he even received a posthumous Golden Turkey Award for Worst Casting.
In the very least enough progress has been made that Hollywood wouldn't dare try to get away with such blatant miscasting nowadays.
