X-Men Film Universe's Future: 10 Things You Need To Know

8. X-Men: Apocalypse Ends The First Class Trilogy

The first X-Men trilogy didn't end particularly well; the disastrous X-Men: The Last Stand killed off pretty much all the characters fans loved and royally f***ed up one of the most beloved stories of all-time, so Matthew Vaughn's prequel-reboot a few years later was welcomed with open arms. However, with X-Men: Days Of Future Past linking the two franchises and creating a new timeline in which vastly different stories can be told that don't have to build towards what we saw in X-Men and X-2, the future of the X-Men is very much a mystery as of right now. That's no bad thing of course, but producer and writer Simon Kinberg has confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse is going to bring this First Class trilogy to an end, something that leaves us with even more questions about where things go from here. "It feels like the culmination of the four main characters really - McAvoy, Fassbender, Nic Hoult, and Jen," he explained earlier this year, "and it€™s a bigger movie in both physical scale and I would say emotional stakes too because it is the culmination of this mini trilogy of stories." The actors Kinberg mentions only ever signed up for three movies, and it's been widely reported that both Hoult and Lawrence are ready to move on. McAvoy and Fassbender meanwhile are thought to be open to reprising the roles of Professor X and Magneto, so they could remain a constant as this franchise looks to move into a new trilogy which is presumably going to revolve around a classic team of X-Men made up of names like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Angel, and Nightcrawler (all of whom are being introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse). Either way, X-Men: Apocalypse is clearly going to bring this current era of X-Men movies - which really have revolved around the foursome mentioned by Kinberg - to an end.
