X-Men Film Universe's Future: 10 Things You Need To Know
7. Gambit Doesn't Have A Director
With Hugh Jackman set to move on from the role of Wolverine, Fox are looking for a new face to lead the X-Men franchise into the future. That will apparently be Channing Tatum's Gambit, a character set to be introduced in his own solo movie next year. However, Gambit has not been having an easy time of it when it comes to returning to the big screen, with Tatum initially holding things up over a dispute over pay, and more recently Rupert Wyatt deciding that he was stepping down as the spinoff's director. While that was initially blamed on scheduling issues, it's since been revealed that the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes helmer stepped down after clashing with the studio over his vision for the character. While they were apparently happy with what Wyatt was bringing to the table - this wasn't looking like another Josh Trank scenario - the two parties just had very different ideas of where things should go. Ultimately, it seems like the decision was made that it would be better for Fox and the filmmaker to go their separate ways, mostly because the former were cautious (and this no doubt goes back to Trank) of handing Wyatt a $100 million franchise with full creative control. Two weeks on from that news breaking and there's been no word on a replacement director, and while it's still early-ish days for Gambit, Fox is going to need find someone soon, especially if they hope to meet the movie's planned 7th October 2016 release date. Hopefully it's going to be someone who can brings something special to the table. After all, there isn't a whole lot of excitement surrounding this movie in the first place, and word that Fox wants to keep a close eye on Gambit has led to comparisons of what happened when they did that with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and (you had to know this was coming) Fantastic Four.
