X-Men Film Universe's Future: 10 Things You Need To Know
6. Mystique Is No Longer A Villain
The first official synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse found its way online via a promotional partnership with M&M of all places, but along with the standard plot teases, it featured a very surprising reveal. After vaguely setting up Apocalypse's role in the movie and how a disheartened Magneto ends up working alongside the "first and most powerful mutant", it's mentioned that, "As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction." While the events of X-Men: Days Of Future Past made it clear that Professor X would finally assemble the X-Men, Mystique's plan was a little less clear, especially as she was shown making off with Wolverine's unconscious form while disguised as General Stryker. However, in the years which have passed between these two movies, she's clearly gone full on hero and decided to lead the X-Men. This is quite the departure from the comic books and what Matthew Vaughn seemingly had planned when he sent Raven off with Magento at the end of X-Men: First Class. Of course, a new timeline means new types of stories, and this is an undeniably interesting direction to take the character in. Mystique as a villain has been done to death in the original X-Men trilogy, and if this is Lawrence's farewell to the franchise, it'll be fun to have her character go out as a hero (though her shape shifting abilities obviously mean that the role could easily be recast...).
