X-Men Apocalypse: 13 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment

4. Bryan Singer's Mediocre Direction

One of the movie's most crushing let-downs was Bryan Singer's direction. Though he's never been the most exceptional action director, he's given each of his X-Men movies a distinct look and feel, whereas Apocalypse lurches more into generic blockbuster territory with its wanton scenes of over-familiar destruction porn.

More to the point, some of the editing is really messy, and Singer's shot selection lacks the confidence and imagination of the prior movies. It would honestly be easy to believe Singer didn't even direct this one: if someone told us that Brett Ratner or another hack filled the spot, we'd buy it.

Basically it's just utterly unremarkable filmmaking technique, following blockbuster formula but with some blatantly awful cuts between shots, and only a few truly exceptional scenes. We'll give Singer the benefit of the doubt considering this three prior successes, and hopefully this is just a rare blip that doesn't quite hit.
