X-Men Apocalypse: 36 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes & References You Need To See

34. The Original Horsemen

The pre-credits sequence sees Apocalypse's rebirthing ceremony in ancient Egypt that sees him buried under thousands of tonnes of rock and dirt. The insurrection also gives us a chance to see his original Four Horsemen (or at least his Ancient Egyptian team, since he will have had others before that).

Though they're only given their Horsemen names in the credits (Death, War, Pestilence and Famine), some of the powers the Horsemen show off do seem to have been borrowed from other Horsemen over the years. The ability to manipulate fire seems to hint at Sunfire, the telekinetic abilities of Famine seem to parallel Polaris' powers and the sequence when one of the Horsemen strips two enemies to their skeletons seems to call back to Autumn Rolfson (the comic book Famine)'s powers.

Incidentally, all of the Ancient Horsemen are played by veteran stunt performers, and all - rather pleasantly - have played a role in previous X-Men movies (including Deadpool).

As in the comics, Apocalypse has a thing for dressing his followers in his own way. Clearly at one stage he was heavily influenced by Tron.
