Everyone must admit they have a soft spot for Willem Dafoe. The man is a terrific actor and his addition to any film is a welcome one. However, his role here serves little to no purpose, besides a cool cameo and gifting Arthur with a trident and armour.

Dafoe does a fine job in the role of mentor to Aquaman, and the scene explains why Arthur suddenly had a trident and Atlantean armour in the battles against Steppenwolf (which was left unexplained in the theatrical film).

The role does help set up the future events of the Aquaman solo film, however this part's purpose could have easily been added onto the similar role Mera (Amber Heard) already plays in the movie in trying to persuade Arthur to fight for his people and embrace his heritage.

Dafoe's luscious locks are not enough to distract fans from the fact that his cut role from the theatrical film was likely unnecessary, but his addition is still a nice one for fans of the DCEU.
