With Captain Marvel 2 still tentatively booked in for a November 2022 release, the sequel has now landed its ‘big bad’.

As per Deadline, Zawe Ashton has signed on to play the main villain of this second solo outing for Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. While we now know that the Velvet Buzzsaw and Nocturnal Animals star is on board for this follow-up picture, it’s yet to be revealed exactly who Ashton will be playing in the film.

In terms of what we do know already about Captain Marvel 2, rather than the ‘90s setting of the first movie, this sequel will take place in the present-day landscape of the MCU. Joining Brie Larson this time out will be Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau – who can currently be seen in WandaVision – and Iman Vellani, who is due to headline Disney+’s Ms. Marvel miniseries as the titular Kamala Khan.

From a script by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell, the upcoming Candyman reboot’s Nia DaCosta is in the director’s chair for Captain Marvel 2.

Up next for the silver screen action of the MCU is the Scarlett Johansson-fronted Black Widow, which is due to arrive in cinemas this May after being pushed back several times from its initial April 2020 release date.
