Zombieland: Double Tap Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. The Sentimental Drama Doesn't Really Work
The first film thankfully didn't try to get serious too often, though its attempts to force a family dynamic between the four survivors nevertheless came off a little forced and hokey.
The same is basically true here, as a decent amount of time is devoted to the relationship drama between Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) and Wichita (Emma Stone), which while fine when played for laughs, feels like a huge waste of time when it's actually played straight.
At the end of the day these movies are breezy, knowingly silly horror-comedies, and you have to wonder if anyone watching actually cares about this relationship with any sincerity? And yet, there are a few eyebrow-raising moments where the script certainly seems to think so.
It's not a huge problem all things considered, especially as Eisenberg and Stone give rock solid performances, but actual Human Drama is something these movies absolutely do not need. Keep it light and keep it fun.
