10 2017 Video Games That Wasted Their Biggest Selling Point

8. Taking The Franchise In A Bold New Direction - Mass Effect Andromeda

Mass Effect Andromeda
Bioware

Simply because it wasn't a numbered instalment, Bioware were in position to experiment with Mass Effect Andromeda. Clearly we were going to the Andromeda galaxy, but what crazy new alien species would we find? What otherwordly planets, biomes and extraterrestrial life could they think of?

Well, it turns out... the answer was, erm... next to nothing. Andromeda's new races were a load of armoured-up soldier-men and the rest were cat people. We DID hear about another race but... never saw them. Mass Effect Andromeda went from having a blank canvas to play with, to getting lost in a sea of beige - it was that generic, bland and forgettable.

From developer in-fighting between studios to publisher mandates telling various coders to focus on the game's multiplayer over refining, say, facial animation, the results spoke for themselves.

The second we pundits got a look at how Andromeda was shaping up, we laughed. And then we kept laughing, long into the year.
