If you’ve never had strong feelings about a square or a rectangle before, may I introduce you to Thomas Was Alone.

A masterclass in storytelling, but certainly not in art direction, Thomas Was Alone is a fantastic puzzle-platformer that tells the story of a group of shapes. You’ll learn about them, watch their relationships evolve, and delve into the secrets of the game world. The animations in this one are actually pretty lovely.

They need to be given it’s a platformer, but as I said, all of the characters are just shapes, single coloured 2D shapes that you’ll navigate around a game world pieced together through a series of increasingly tricky levels. There’s nothing graphically impressive here and yet it’s one of the best stories told in video games with genuinely interesting puzzle-platforming mechanics.

Like I said, if you want to cry at the emotional journey of a rectangle and his friends this is the game for you.
