10 Amazing Video Games With TERRIBLE Graphics
6. Minecraft
There’s a good chance you’ve found yourself in one of two camps for this one. The camp insisting Minecraft is pursuing a certain style and there is a certain charm to it, or the camp saying, “Yeah, fair, it’s a bit crap.”
To address the elephant in the room, Minecraft looks the way it does because it was built using voxels in order to service the mining and creation mechanics. It should be noted there’s just only so much you can do with voxels. While the game certainly does have a signature look to it, it’s a bridge too far to call it an enviable look. Sure, you can recreate some of the world’s most iconic locations in block form but a perfect circle is always going to be a jagged edge out of reach.
This isn’t to say Minecraft is a bad game as millions of players can attest, the basic graphics are just very much there to serve the gameplay.
The divisive visual style does have its fans but even those who disliked it couldn’t overlook the sheer joy of its multiplayer, creation mechanics, and addictive gameplay loop which rewards exploration and building. The more heavily criticised components were things like the poor textures which did eventually receive a makeover post-launch.
Still, Minecraft looks like Minecraft but if you’re super on board I’m guessing this doesn’t bother you one bit. The stilted animations and lego-esque polygons are likely still a part of why the game has persisted as such a huge hit for kids.
No level of average graphics have prevented Minecraft from being a beloved sandbox favourite for all ages, for over a decade.
