10 Amazingly Bizarre Video Games You Must Play
4. Katamari Damacy
Some games are so strangely unique you want to play them as soon as you discover them. Such was the case with Katamari Damacy, which was a surprise hit in 2004; its unconventional concept attracting enough of a cult following to where it is now one of the most beloved games to come out of the PS2 era.
The story is quirky in that Japanese way we’re all familiar with. After the King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky, he tasks you, his son, with recreating them. With katamari in hand, you go to Earth and begin rolling and collecting enough material to create new stars. As the ball gets bigger, the items you collect get bigger, to the point where you are collecting entire buildings and landscapes.
The game design is adorably simple in both concept and execution, as is the art style, which is eye-popping, colorful, and offbeat. While some games are so strange they can turn you off from wanting to engage with them, Katamari Damacy has a universal innocence and an endearing sense of humor to its strangeness that draws you in. There was, and still is, nothing quite like it.
