10 Amazingly Bizarre Video Games You Must Play

3. Killer7

Killer7 is a game so unrestrained in its craziness that you're not sure that what you’re playing is either indecipherable nonsense or a work of misunderstood genius. Everything about it feels creepy and unstable, and from the moment the menu screen appears a sense of unease washes over you.

You play as various members of the “killer7,” a group of assassins, all of which are actually split personalities of one man, Harman Smith, who performs hits for the United States government. Eventually he gets involved in a political conspiracy involving Japan and the U.S., which is about as grounded as the plot gets, because everything else around it is bonkers.

There are demons, demi-gods, and an ethereal man in a gimp suite named Iwazaru who follows you around and aids you in your missions. And that barely scratches the surface of the weirdness of this game.

Killer7 is like stepping into the mind of a patient in an insane asylum. Everything, from the storytelling to the distinctly cel-shaded art style to the control scheme, is unconventional. It’s such a comprehensively bizarre package that it gained little fanfare when it was first released in 2005. Since then though it has earned a devoted cult following and has been recognized as a unique work of video game art.
