It's cruel to name an animal after their biggest personality flaw - and also a pretty bad incentive to get them to change - but there's no denying that Klepto the Condor is a fitting moniker.

Klepto first can be found holding a star and circling around the level ominously. Take said star, and the bird will go to get its vengeance by trying to steal your hat.

As it turns out, this isn't important just on a moral level, but also a physical one, as without their hats, Mario (and in the DS version, Luigi, and Wario) all take double damage on attacks - which means it's a pretty high priority for all sorts of reasons to get it back.

That said, it only takes one connected attack for the condor to drop the goods, and for you to be reunited with your beloved cap once more. And, to be fair, you did kind of start it by taking the power star from them in the first place.
