After almost a whole decade in development, Dead Island 2 is finally coming out in April, and from the gameplay previews we've seen so far, it looks like the famously troubled project might've finally produced a decent end result.

While Dead Island 2 doesn't look like it's doing much at all to reinvent the wheel, there are a few features that should help it stand out amid the growing pantheon of open-world zombie games.

For starters, there's the fact that the game will launch with Alexa voice controls (!), and most promisingly, the inclusion of a proprietary gore system.

FLESH - short for "Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids" - is the name of Dead Island's 2 bespoke gore tech, where every zombie combatant in the game is procedurally destructible, meaning you can dismantle basically every part of their anatomy, both inside and out.

Which of the game's many weapons you use will of course dictate how the damage is meted out, but clothing, skin, muscle, and even bone have been engineered to react in specific ways to whatever your weapon of choice may be.

If nothing else, it should ensure that Dead Island 2 features some of the most nauseating-yet-addictive dismemberment mechanics in video game history.
