3. Backrooms
What comes to mind when you think about horror games? Darkness? Greyscale? Shadows? Clearly 'IEP_ESY' didn't quite get the memo when creating 'Backrooms'.
This game, based off of a creepypasta of the same name, ditches the traditional lighting of horror titles and instead adopts a bright yellow colour palette. Following the rather simple gameplay loop of escaping the Backrooms in question whilst being stalked by creatures that don't want you to leave. Whilst other titles mentioned so far have been narrative adventures, the only narrative that this game provides is that the 'Backrooms' reside outside of reality and we have found ourselves trapped within the endless halls. Stuck at a walking pace, you must find an escape whilst being followed through this randomly generated maze-like structure (that clearly never had an interior designer, because all yellow is not a great look) in under 5 minutes. Escape, don't get caught, simple as that.
The random nature of the game means that you may find an escape straight away, or be trawling through the endless halls until the time runs out... if you survive that long. Whilst not unique in terms of gameplay, or backed by a compelling narrative, Backrooms is one of the games that you can load up and play for a few minutes for some tense fun in an unusual backdrop.
