10 Awesome Video Game Levels That Ended Painfully Soon
8. The Falling Ship - Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
LucasArt's underrated shooter has a variety of innovative missions where Jedi hero, Kyle Katarn, faces off against all sorts of enemies on battle stations, alien planets, and Imperial bases.
But arguably the most creative and heart-racing moment in Dark Forces II is The Falling Ship. The mission opens with the anti-gravity system failing on the Sulon Star freighter, which Kyle is residing on. With the vessel hurtling out of control and expected to crash into a canyon in under four minutes, Kyle must find an exit as fast as possible.
This is easier said than done, since the lack of gravity makes the Jedi's escape incredible disorienting, especially while navigating around corridors, dodging falling debris, and fighting troopers. Also, you have a tight deadline, creating a state of urgency unlike anything else in the game.
But there within lies the problem. Even though players would love to traverse through the ship in anti-gravity, you don't have a second to waste due to the restrictive time limit. If the level was much longer and the time-limit was tacked on at the final checkpoint, you'd have more time to explore without compromising the tension.
