10 Beautiful Video Game Endings That Made Us Cry
8. God of War Ragnarok
The new God of War duology sees Kratos trying to find a way to move forward after all the horrible things he did back in the original set of games; to be a better person than who he was before, for the sake of his child.
Throughout the story, Kratos is faced with temptation after temptation to revert to the way he was, by both external forces like the manipulative Odin and his pantheon of murderous gods, and his internal struggles against his nature.
True to its name, Ragnarok closes with the eponymous Norse apocalypse, as Kratos leads an army against Odin to overthrow him once and for all. The war for Asgard is one of the greatest final levels in gaming history; a challenging, exciting final battle against the forces of Asgard, a rematch against Kratos' thematic mirror Thor, and a final confrontation with Odin.
Rather than the end of all things that Ragnarok was supposed to be, Kratos and Atreus' actions ensure that it's instead a new beginning for the Nine Realms.
And to close out this story of breaking and changing fate to find a better tomorrow, Kratos discovers one final prophecy from his late wife, Faye. The mural depicts Kratos as a benevolent builder god, revered by all.
Kratos, seeing his new path, breaks down in tears.
