7. Rise Of The Triad
Rise of the Triad graduated from the same school of gun-toting hardknocks as the genre’s granddaddy Wolfenstein 3D, and will always be remembered as a quintessentially ‘90s FPS.
Apogee Software’s 1994 bullet fest is a product of its generation, a time when the best shooters involved blasting anything that moves, scouring maze-like levels for keys and cursing your crappy dial-up internet connection for scuppering deathmatches.
There were twists on the tried and tested formula, like magic weapons and a power-up that transformed you into a dog... for some reason, but Rise of the Triad was otherwise one for the purists.
Interceptor Entertainment rolled out faithful yet low-key remake in 2013, but the potential is there to reboot Rise of the Triad in a more ambitious way.
The source material could serve as the basis for a project similar in scale to Wolfenstein: The New Order, giving us another alternative history adventure that embraces nostalgia and breathes new life into a flagging property.
