10 Beloved Video Games That Left A Horrible First Impression
2. Grim Fandango
Although the gorgeous charm of Grim Fandango can't be overstated, the opening puzzles of this classic point-and-click adventure don't quite live up to the quality of the title's writing and presentation.
And while these opening levels are perfectly fine from a storytelling perspective, it takes hours to get used to Grim Fandango's obtuse and convoluted puzzle system.
Because it came from an era where puzzle games were as nonsensical as possible (seriously, just opening a door can take an hour and require you to find five seemingly random items that for some reason work together), the frustration of Grim Fandango's opening hours can often offset the amount of sheer fun that comes from the game's brilliant cutscenes.
It's not necessarily fair to asses Grim Fandango's dated gameplay in a modern context, but because the title has only recently been made widely available thanks to a brand new remastered edition, these opening puzzles would only have new players wondering why Grim Fandango is seen as such a revered cult classic in the first place.
