7. Katana Zero

A personal favourite of the year so far, Katana Zero is a sleak 2D action-platformer, taking a ton of influence from Hotline Miami and the overall synthwave movement in music right now.

You play as The Dragon, a katana-wielding hitman who embarks on missions for someone who appears to be your therapist. Although there is a brilliant, twist-filled story involving a myriad of characters, government conspiracies and muahaha'ing villains, it's the sublime, focused gameplay that keeps you sprinting from kill to kill.

Unlike Hotline Miami, here you can hold a button to trigger super slow-motion. The colours bleed out the world and the game's pumping soundtrack fades away. Here you can reflect bullets back at those firing at you, or cut straight through a platoon of henchmen in one giant fountain of claret.

Katana Zero also has a really neat dialogue system of interrupts and branching conversations, keeping you invested in who you are, who you work for and what's really going on. Plus, like Hotline Miami and Furi, the soundtrack slaps.
