10 Best Apocalyptic Video Games That DON'T Involve Zombies
4. Metro Exodus
The third game in the Metro series and based on the books series of the same name, 2019’s Metro Exodus takes place primarily in the now-wasteland of the former Russian Federation, after a nuclear apocalypse forced all surviving humans underground. Having spent the past two games surviving within Moscow’s metro system, player character Artyom flees the tunnels and embarks on a year-long journey in the hope of finding other survivors on the surface.
Gameplay is centered around the first-person shooter aspects, as Artyom combats both hostile humans and creatures mutated by radiation. However, it also features survival horror and stealth elements while you struggle to find both scarce ammunition and other means of survival in the desolate wilderness.
Exodus features far more diverse environments and exploration than the prior two games, with a wider scope and insight into the world at large post-apocalypse.
As a result, the story is accessible to both new players and old fans alike, and the slow-pace of the game allows a more considered appreciation of the nuclear fallout’s reality than many typical ‘run-and-gun’ shooters. This certainly isn’t an apocalypse you can merely breeze through, and all the better for it.
