6. Killing The Riftworm (Gears Of War 2)

It's not just the Gears who come packing with renewed vigour in the second game. The Locust are now sinking entire human cities with the High Priest Skorge's goliath monster; the Riftworm. In one of Gears' most gory segments, Delta Squad are forced to chainsaw their way out of the beast.

In order to kill the Riftworm, you must sever the arteries connecting to each of its four hearts - but do it quickly. Marcus and the others are beginning to drown in blood. There's a lovely graphical touch to this part of the game where your armour slowly turns a dripping crimson as you soak in the worm's blood more and more. It's delightfully over the top and gruesome and really forces you to put your chainsaws to good work.

Even better is the cinematic after you finish off the worm and it collapses to the ground, dead. Marcus and his squad then proceed to rip their way out of it and spill out onto the floor like they're going down a damn water slide.

Disgusting, but in the best possible way.
