8. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard
Taking the series to the first person let Capcom rediscover what made Resident Evil such a seminal series in the first place, and the results on display in VII are wonderful; a truly frightening experience.
The first full length title to utilise the company's then new RE Engine, the results were an impressive debut for the technology which aims for near-photorealism, helping to realise an ambitious relaunch for the longstanding series.
You play as Ethan Winters, who has come to a deserted plantation in Louisiana after receiving a message from his long-missing-presumed-dead wife Mia. The focus of the story is the demented and infected Baker Family who terrorise and hunt the player throughout the game's magnificently oppressive environments.
Resident Evil's pivot towards more action oriented fare was seen by some as moving away from the spirit of the series and so with Biohazard, Capcom successfully reinvigorated its franchise, returning it to those survival horror roots that made it such a standout to begin with. With a sequel, Village, on its way (likely 2021), Game Pass lets whomsoever never sampled this return to form before the next title is upon us.
