10 Best Lord of the Rings Games
8. The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age (2004)
A turn-based RPG set during the events of Peter Jackson's acclaimed trilogy, The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age (not to be confused with the Game Boy Advance title of the same name) sees Gondorian Captain Berethor charged with tracking down Boromir after he leaves for Rivendell. Berethor soon joins forces with other original characters as the party's mission begins to overlap with key events from the films.
Narrated by Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Gandalf, the plot sees players retrace the steps of the Fellowship. Along the way, they'll fight side-by-side with Gandalf against the Balrog, defend Helm's Deep, and aid the Fellowship in their last stand at The Black Gate. Developers EA Redwood did a tremendous job bringing each location to life, immersing players within the beloved fantasy setting.
Although The Third Age drew heavily from classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy X, many of its RPG mechanics were simplified to make the title more accessible for general audiences. Alongside mostly linear levels, unbalanced difficulty meant that encounters were often far too easy.
Although The Third Age is a hugely entertaining Lord Of The Rings outing, it wasn't necessarily a great RPG.
