10 Best Moments In Final Fantasy History

8. Vanille & Fang Sacrifice Themselves - Final Fantasy XIII

Whilst a subset of fans genuinely love the 13th main entry in the series, I am one of the many for whom it embodied the urban myth that any number 13 is bad for us. It just didn't feel like a Final Fantasy to me.

However, one of the standout moments was at the end when implied - but not really said - couple, Vanille and Fang, sacrifice themselves. After defeating Orphan, floating continent Cocoon is falling towards Pulse on a collision course to kill everyone. Vanille and Fang join hand in hand to summon Ragnarok, crystallising themselves in the process. A flow of lava forms between Pulse and Cocoon to prevent the fall, and the people of both are saved.

In a game sometimes devoid of classic Final Fantasy moments, party members sacrificing themselves for the greater cause is a staple tactic of the series, and XIII does it in epic proportions.
