7. Cecil Becomes A Paladin - Final Fantasy IV

In most games you have to pick good or evil and run with it. Final Fantasy IV lets you do both.

Dark Knight, Cecil Harvey, is Captain of the Red Wings. Whilst not brimming with evil, Cecil seems all to willing to obey his King. Certainly from the point of view of the outsider, flying in and stealing Mysidia's Water Crystal, one of the four elemental crystals that keep the planet ticking, isn't the kind of thing heroes do.

When innocents die, and Cecil questions his King, he is stripped of rank and title and sent to deliver a ring to the town of Mist. When monsters burst forth and kill everyone in sight, it's not hard to see why Rydia sees black-armour clad Cecil as the big 'n' nasty.

In a desperate attempt to seek redemption, Cecil travels into the mountains where he is forced to confront himself. He is asked to battle his Dark Knight form the way a hero would - which is to put down your sword and wait, emerging as a Paladin Knight.

Very symbolic and all... but if you try putting your sword down in the fight against Golbez. It doesn't end well.
