10 Best New Male Video Game Characters Of The Decade
6. Trevor Phillips - Grand Theft Auto V
Another decade, another Rockstar psychopath.
Rockstar have always been great at writing violent, remorseless characters, but Trevor went above and beyond, even for them. He wasn’t just a runaway crazy, but was grounded in the story, funny, and actually had a solid narrative.
To call him relatable or sympathetic would be a bridge too far, but he’s clearly written in a three dimensional way. While Grand Theft Auto haven’t lost their roots, Trevor fits the trend started by Claude and built upon significantly by Nico of adding a clear character drive through the story.
Grand Theft Auto V might have had three protagonists, but it’s always been Trevor’s game. No disrespect to Michael or Franklin - both solid characters in their own right - but Trevor is just such a large presence that he dominates the game, and the conversation of GTA as a whole.
It’s difficult to comprehend that the PS4/Xbox One era went by without a GTA release (rerelease of 2013’s GTA V not withstanding). Though obvious factors are Rockstar milking GTA Online and developing Red Dead Redemption 2, the fact that they’ll struggle to top Trevor Phillips is surely in their minds too.
