Wrestling games aren’t always about spamming finisher buttons and awkwardly walking around the squared circle in a sideways sort of motion. Extreme Warfare Revenge was a godsend for an entire legion of wrestling fans, in that it put you in control of what happened without having to actually control what was happening. If you ever dreamt of booking your own promotion, EWR was the game for you.

While it often gets compared to Football Manager, it is better to think of EWR as a sort of Championship Manager, the more simple version of the detailed beast that was to come. Your task in the game was to book a promotion, be it a monolith like WWE or a minor backyard outfit in Kentucky, with an entire world of wrestlers available to you. It was detailed enough to be interesting but not to the point of confusion. In short, it was excellent.

The most fascinating way to play the game was to take over TNA or ROH and see if you could make a claim for that coveted #2 position. That almost inevitably involved endless disagreements with Sophie, hiring and firing backstage staff on a weekly basis and all the rest. This one still holds up today.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
