1. Lancer - Gears Of War

For all of the clever or subtle weaponry that video games have placed in the hands of their players, sometimes you just need something that abandons all pretence in favour of sheer brutality. Given the devastating fierceness with which the Locust horde is attacking earth in Gears of War, the Lancer Assault Rifle is the perfect example of this.

In the first instance the Lancer is just what it sounds like; the immensely powerful assault rifle fires 100s of rounds per minute and can trim the ranks of attacking Locust like a lawnmower trimming the heads from blades of grass. Put this rifle in the right hands and the Locust can be held at bay. And on the occasion that they do get a little too close, the Lancer will provide solutions once again.

While early versions simply featured a blade strapped to the front of the barrel, the Mark 2 Lancer was upgraded gloriously. The chainsaw attachment allows any cornered operative the chance to fight their way out by ripping directly through the throat of their attacker and despatching them in a bloody pulp.

Kills with this attachment are among the best-looking in the game, and stand as the best reminder of the signature brutality of the Gears of War series.

The Lancer is, for its blend of raw power and unashamed brashness, the best original weapon in gaming history.
