10 Best PS2 Games Of All Time
5. TimeSplitters 2
Free Radical’s TimeSplitters 2 was a titan of industry when it dropped in 2002. The first-person shooter’s story centred on two space marines who had to travel through different periods of time in order to stop the titular TimeSplitters from rewriting and ruining history.
However, it’s not the story mode that this game’s remembered for, although it is great as well. It’s the multiplayer that set this game miles ahead of its competitors. These split-screen competitive and co-op modes could be played locally by up to four players (or sixteen with a system link) and hosted an impressive roster of kooky characters to choose from.
Outside of the multiple human soldiers, players could also pick from a gingerbread man, a duck, a human who believed he was a robot, and a robot with a goldfish bowl for a head (because, why not?) It’s hard to find a better time than you’ll have chasing your friends around various maps as a gingerbread man armed with a tommy gun.
Although it was followed up by the sensational Future Perfect in 2005, it’s TimeSplitters 2 that resonates in our heads to this day as the Goldeneye 64 for the next generation. Maybe we’ll get that fourth entry soon. It has been 15 years, after all…
