2. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square's prized IP harbours so much power in the gaming industry, even weak instalments like FFXIII bring in the big bucks. And since Final Fantasy VII is the franchise's flagship, FFVII Rebirth should've made a mint.

However, the hyped entry opened with less sales than FFVII Remake or FFXVI. The exact sales haven't been shared, but there's no question Rebirth failed expectations.

Although Cloud's latest adventure is a little bloated, Rebirth offers everything purists could ask for. Unlike its predecessor, the pointy-haired hero and his allies finally get to explore the vast land of Midgar.

The combat, which was already on top-form before, has been refined with sharp and accessible mechanics. The quests are remarkably varied, ranging from tearjerking, hilarious, epic, to downright zany (especially after stumbling upon that Bald Bar).

The way it utilises nostalgia-bait is clever and funny, especially in Fort Condor, which emulates the blocky graphics from the PS1. This section also demonstrates how far the graphics have come over the years. Speaking of nostalgia, veterans should be over the moon facing off against franchise-favourite, Gilgamesh.

Considering the masses have been clamouring for a modern remake of Final Fantasy VII for decades, it's a pity Rebirth isn't flying off the shelves.
