TiGames' F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch launched on the PS4 and PS5 back in 2021. Though the last-gen port was riddled with technical problems, the PS5 version is a must-have.

Despite being labelled as a Metroidvania, F.I.S.T. has elements of run-and-gun titles like Gunstar Heroes and Contra. Speaking of which, this side-scroller captures the essence of 90s bullet-hell shooters better than the recent Contra remake.

Although games in this genre can be bogged down by backtracking or vague directions, F.I.S.T. avoids these pitfalls. Thanks to the fast travel system and detailed map, getting lost is a rare occurrence. Even though your next destination isn't always laid out, the works in the game's favour, since it compels you to explore, allowing you locate all sorts of secrets.

Though you have to revisit certain areas, it doesn't feel repetitive once you've obtained some upgrades, since you'll find different ways to navigate through each terrain. Also, it's rewarding to return to old places and wipe the floor with enemies you had trouble with in the past, with significantly more upgraded weaponary.

It may not be on par with Hollow Knight or the Ori series, but this Metroidvania is worth a look.
