Out of all of the films on this list, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is the least direct adaptation intending to recreate the game's plot and style, and instead a complete re-imagining of the Mortal Kombat universe. This is the craziest creative choice to happen to the franchise, and that's taking into account the fact that the Terminator can decapitate the Joker whilst fighting in arcade. Honestly, this series gets madder the more you think about it.

In this short, Jax Briggs is a police captain, Scorpion is a prisoner, and Baraka has dreadlocks and facial piercings? This new world bares little resemblance to the original (or even the remake) universe, instead crafting its own lore for its world. This makes the piece feel entirely new, and if not for the names used, audiences would likely not realise that it was an MK film to begin with.

What's more is that Rebirth was a pitch to Warner Bros. to allow Kevin Tancharoen, the director, to direct a new Mortal Kombat film. While a full film never came about, WB ended up funding Tancharoen to make Mortal Kombat: Legacy, a web series than ran for two seasons. And it brought Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa back to the role of Shang Tsung. What more could you want?
