3. Ultimate Spider-Man

Fixing the one aforementioned negative with narrative and storytelling, Ultimate Spider-Man saw Treyarch return one year later to deliver their best performance yet.

Deviating away from the realistic portrayal and aesthetic of the movies, they instead looked to the runaway popularity of Spidey's new Ultimate-inspired TV show. As such, we got all the web swinging and solid combat of before, but with an exemplary voice cast, solid story, incredibly fun villains and - for the first time in gorgeous 3D - playable Venom.

If just swinging through a cel-shaded New York as a constantly chatty Spidey wasn't glorious enough, you could switch to the pedestrian-eating Venom, also lobbing police cars at anybody who dared get in your way.

The story didn't have the pair on the same page - far from it - but by embracing just how much fans have wanted to cut loose with Eddie Brock's hulking alter-ego, it was just what 2004's instalment needed to edge its progenitor.
