10 Best Underground Areas In Video Games
8. Deep Roads/Orzammar (Dragon Age: Origins)
If you're wondering what makes Dragon Age's Deep Roads so memorable, well... you're hardly likely to forget the lovely creature adorning this webpage, are you?
Having said that, hideous mammarian monstrosities are but one of the reasons Dragon Age: Origin's Deep Roads made the list. As well as soul-shuddering body horror, Origins' vast underground area is also home to the Dwarven city of Orzammar and it's here that shows why Bioware's writers were once considered the best in the business.
Before Dragon Age's developers wrote a single line of code, the writers spent a year imagining the fictional land of Thedas - its races, its religions, its history. That dedication to worldbuilding pays off across the entire game, but arguably never more than in Orzammar. This underground city operates under a strict caste system, which you'll see enough evidence of to generate a deep-seated loathing for how it treats those unfortunate enough to be born on the wooden-spoon end of the privilege scale.
Dragon Age's underworld is burdened with a double whammy of horrors - one societal, the other physical - and it's to the writers' credit that both are equally revolting.
