10 Best Underground Areas In Video Games
9. Hoxxes IV (Deep Rock Galactic)
When done right, few games offer the giddy thrills of a co-op shooter. Fewer still manage to reach the peaks scaled by Valve's seminal Left 4 Dead 2 but - somewhat ironically - its the cave-dwellers of Deep Rock Galactic who come closest to the summit.
Granted, DRG's world of Hoxxes IV may lack the graphical sophistication of its contemporaries (such as Space Marine 2's, which this writer regularly boots up just to let out a quick "AROOGA!" at its Tyranid swarms) but its lo-tech visuals are the key to its secret sauce - fully destructible environments.
What makes the caves and labyrinths of Deep Rock Galactic so special is your ability to reshape them to your will. You can either carefully dig your way down to your objective, minimizing hostile contact via careful planning and expert tool use, or you can simply blast holes in the floor, jump down to your objective and attempt to plow through the hordes of chittering space bugs woken up by your merry trail of destruction.
Hoxxes IV may not be the most graphically splendiferous location on this list, but its malleable environments make it one of the most purely fun playspaces of the past few years.
