10 Best Video Game Minigames Ever
3. Gwent - The Witcher III
The Witcher III is an absolute giant of a game, with a main campaign that can take up to fifty hours to complete and a huge open world ripe with things to steal a player's attention away. However, one particular minigame found across the Continent has proven to be one of the best side features ever created and gone on to justify its very own spinoff game: Gwent.
Given a proud and extensive amount of lore in the world of The Witcher, Gwent is a card game that sees two players pull ten cards out of one of five unique types of decks, and compete to win the most amount of strength points until players can't play a card or are forced to pass their turn. Whilst other games such as Triple Triad from Final Fantasy VIII are undoubtedly good fun, they're pretty clearly bonus side bits of material players can take some time to enjoy, and don't come anywhere near matching Gwent for lore, strategy or even legacy outside the game. For example, Gwent decks can have anywhere between 25-40 cards and, as such, encourage much more on-the-fly risky plays that help lend every game a more individual feel than its virtual counterparts.
With a level of depth and skill that a title like Hearthstone, an actual card game, would be proud of, what really helps Gwent stand out as something truly special is the The Witcher III's side quest: Collect 'Em All. The side quest asks players to troop around the world and collect up all 120 cards placed around the world.
So, not only has The Witcher III created an entire card game complete with depth, strategy and lore, but it has even managed to sandwich in a whole Pokémon-esque accomplishment about going around the world collecting up as many cards as they can find in a way that no other title has been able to match.
