Whilst neither Sonic Adventure nor Sonic Adventure 2 has aged all too well since their initial acclaim, they did at least bring with them the best ever minigame, which the franchise has gone on to neglect over the years since.

The Chao Gardens are so separate from the main game that they certainly had no right being as detailed and impressive as they were. Chaos first began development as the Nightopians in NiGHTS, after which Sega refined their first attempt at creating artificial lives into Sonic Adventure's digital pets. There was even a VMU minigame that let you train them like a tamagotchi!

With the dark vs. light themes so prevalent in the main storyline for Sonic Adventure 2, greater emphasis was put on the bonds and characteristics of how a Chao was brought up in its garden. There are also a plethora of Chao minigames within the Sonic Adventure series that investing time in the Chao Gardens with their little buddies will give players a better chance of winning in.

Honestly, having the data for a player's Chao Gardens suddenly corrupted after hours and hours of time is still one of the most awful feelings someone can experience in a video game, but the pain just goes to show how complex and worthwhile this side-
