Unfortunately, there aren't actually many original female superheroes in the gaming industry. There are many brilliant female heroes, of course - Lara Croft, many of the protagonists of the Final Fantasy series, Samus Aran, etc. - but they do not have the supernatural powers that would gain them inclusion on this list. One exception, however, is Bayonetta. Bayonetta is described as a witch, but really she is a warrior with incredible summoning powers. She is capable of magically generating weapons to assault her enemies with, and her powerful image is amplified by the fact that the game encourages complex and flamboyant combo moves throughout. Bayonetta was critically acclaimed on its release, in part because of its stunning graphics and gameplay dynamics. But what stands out more than anything is the fact that its developers were brave enough to create a strong and compelling female superhero - a rarity in gaming to date.
