10 Best Video Game User Interfaces

1. Into The Breach

Mirror's Edge Catalyst
Subset Games

Though it's completely understandable that more casual gamers might be turned off by Into the Breach's high level of difficulty, the challenge is mitigated considerably by the turn-based strategy game's best-of-class interface.

Developer Subset Games reportedly spent roughly half of the game's four-year development cycle working on its UI, as they attempted to strike a balance between ensuring players knew exactly what was happening and not overwhelming them.

Various elements of the game and its interface were ultimately stripped back after testers found them confusing, yet the end result is still an extremely deep and intelligently designed title.

Co-designer Justin Ma put it quite brilliantly himself by saying, "We would sacrifice cool ideas for the sake of clarity every time."

And yet, Into the Breach certainly doesn't want for cool ideas regardless, managing instead to be both difficult and accessible by not burying players in an avalanche of arcane systems and vague visual "tells."
