10 Best Video Game User Interfaces

5. Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is typically credited with modernising the classic survival horror series, though there is perhaps one aspect of the game which was still designed to embrace the wilful restrictions of the earlier titles - the inventory.

While RE4 allows players to carry a fair amount of gear compared to the three prior mainline games, inventory management can still be a challenge. In fact, it's basically a mini-game in of itself, as fans have lovingly named "Inventory Tetris" over the years.

To make the most of their attache case, players have to arrange items for maximum storage efficiency, because in a pinch you'll absolutely need that extra green herb you spent an indecent amount of time squeezing in there.

Despite the potential to frustrate, it was such a smart revision of the previous games' more rigid inventory system that it actually made item management - whisper it - fun.

Upgrading the attache case was, dare one say, genuinely exciting. It's a shame, then, that the system was ditched for all future Resident Evil games, because it remains one of the best in all of gaming.
