10 Best Video Games Of 2018 You Didn't Play

2. Below

You might remember Below as part of Microsoft's initial montage of upcoming Xbox One games way back in 2013, but you probably didn't realise... it finally released this past December.

Arriving with barely any fanfare whatsoever, Below employs a unique super zoomed-out top-down camera to create one hell of a sense of scale. It plays like pre-Ocarina Zelda with crafting, torches and survival elements, but the majority of your time is spent exploring mysterious caves, dank trenches and towering monuments across a haunting island your character finds themselves on at the start of the game.

Harbouring an indie sensibility as far as never being remotely hand-holdy, the result is a daunting, often intense, meditative adventure punctuated by sharp dodge rolls and accurate sword swipes.

Props to Capybara for electing to polish the game over time rather than rush it out in accordance with Microsoft's release calendar. The result has more than paid off - it's just a case now of ensuring people give it a shot.
