10 Biggest Game Of The Year 2017 Contenders So Far
4. Nier: Automata
To the surprise of literally everyone, Nier: Automata is actually one of the best games of the year.
That's not to say the praise is undeserved. No, rather that Nier is a relatively unknown franchise that no one really paid much attention to back in 2010. Of course, sequels often improve greatly upon the original but Automata feels so amazingly good to play it isn't even in the same class as the first.
Besides the occasional technical hiccup and initially bland protagonist, Nier: Automata is great in every single way. The graphics are distinctly solid, gameplay is everything you expect from Platinum, the story is phenomenally unique, tackling some profound subject matter, the Yoko Taro influences are especially worthwhile, too.
This is a game that combines the themes of depression and identity with that of riding around on woodland animals - what's not to love?
